Our Director

A native of Philadelphia, Daniel Carsello is thrilled to return home to the Penn Glee Club to serve as its Director. While an undergraduate at Penn, Daniel was a member of the Glee Club and served on its board as Secretary-Librarian, Publicity Manager, and President; he also was the Music Director of the Penn Pipers. Daniel also sang with the University Choir and Choral Society and performed works such as Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No. 2 in C Minor and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Great Mass in C Minor. Daniel’s prior experience at the podium includes pit direction for the African American Arts Alliance’s production of Memphis: The Musical (April 2016), Friends Select High School’s production of Cabaret (November 2016), and Penn Singers Light Opera Company’s production of Anything Goes! (December 2017).

Daniel is a fourth-year Ph.D. candidate in Music at Temple University with a concentration in Music Studies; he also received his master’s degree in Music History from Temple (May 2020) and his bachelor’s degree in Music from Penn (May 2016). His research interests include United States vernacular music (particularly barbershop music and the Philadelphia Mummers) and identity, choral pedagogy, late-nineteenth- and early-twentieth-century music, and hermeneutics. He has presented papers on barbershop music and identity, as well as the Mummers, at regional, national, and international conferences. Daniel also serves as a Teaching Assistant at Temple and has taught aural training in the music theory sequence as well as world music courses and courses in the history sequence. He also has served as an instructor for general education courses in music.

Daniel currently sings lead in Prior Engagement, a Philadelphia-based mixed-gender barbershop quartet that is registered in the Mid-Atlantic District of the Barbershop Harmony Society.
